Male Breast Reduction – Man Boobs (Gynaecomastia)

What is Gynaecomastia (Man Boobs)

Enlargement of the male breast area afflicts approximately 30% of the male population across all age groups. Such men commonly are too embarrassed to wear singlet’s or t-shirts or appear ‘topless’ on the beach. In the very young age group there is a strong hormonal element but this influence diminishes with age except for body builders who chose to take anabolic hormones for muscle growth.

The male breast is made up of principally fat tissue, with only a moderate amount of breast tissue. Prior to the advent of liposuction the only available treatment is excision of the breast tissue through an incision beneath the nipple. The problem with this treatment is that there is a scar on the chest wall which often retracts causing a varying degree of distortion of the nipple area. It is seldom the choice of treatment these days.

The modern treatment is liposuction which in most cases removes the solid breast tissue as well as the fat. Very occasionally a revision treatment might be required to produce optimum results.

Q. Is this procedure painful?

A. The modern treatment by liposuction is performed under a general anaesthetic for comfort. After the procedure the discomfort is easily consoled by simple analgesics e.g. Panadol, Aspirin.

Q. What is the post-operative management?

A. Apart from simple analgesics for the first few days it is important to wear an elasticised garment for a number of weeks after. This garment is not visible through normal clothing.

Q. How can drugs cause gynaecomastia?

A. By stimulating an abnormal growth of breast tissue.

Q. Is there a link between gynaecomastia and male breast cancer?

A. No. However, male breast cancer should always be considered with unilateral breast enlargement (enlargement of one breast).
