FUT (Follicular Unit Transplant or Strip)
Both FUE FUT hair transplants can be done but FUT involves removing a horizontal strip of skin, about 1.5 cm wide from the back and suturing it closed. This can leave a horizontal white line or scar that usually varies from 1mm to 3mm in width and is the traditional way of harvesting follicles. Sometimes the line is very hard to find, even by hairdressers.
For FUT we do not shave your donor area so it looks normal at the end of the day. FUT is cheaper and very well tolerated and we can do many more grafts in one day, up to 4000.
FUT is still the most popular technique with Australians because there is no shaving, no number restriction, high graft survival rate and it’s about 25% cheaper.
Any scar from FUT can be easily repaired if necessary with small FUE or SMP micro-pigmentation. A No.3 hair length is enough to hide the line scar.
Hair Transplant Results
Since 2006, our rate of success and satisfaction is virtually 100%.
During a transplant, the hair is essentially redistributed to the necessary areas; it is not created or multiplied. Thus, the density will be less than originally seen, although this will not negatively affect results. The overall coverage will be noticeably improved despite this.
We will often achieve a doubling of hair in the thinning area, if not more!
Our esteemed priority is for a high density, fast recovering, and above all natural result, with soft, personally designed hairlines fitting your individual style and needs.
It is reasonable and expected for majority of transplant recipients to undergo a second procedure to maximize positive results, with patients receiving their second FUT transplant generally utilizing the original incision line to minimize unnecessary additional scarring.
The second FUT procedure can usually be undertaken as soon as 10 months following the first. If an FUE transplant is discussed and selected as the method for the second procedure, this waiting period may be less significant.
The approximate time period for all transplanted hairs to grow is 11-14 months.
- 1-4 Months: Following recovery, your transplanted follicles may hibernate for up to 4 months, and it is normal not to see visible growth during this time.
- 4-6 Months: You are likely to see up to 60% hair growth increase over this time. The hair grows approx 1 cm per month, and may appear dry at first, until the glands produce the necessary natural oils to moisturize them.
- 6-14 Months: The hair will continue to grow and thicken over this time. The follicles continue to grow as if they were still at the back of your scalp. Don’t worry about your personal style; the transplanted hair can be cut, coloured, curled, and styled normally.
Most people who have a hair transplant are likely to have two transplants over a period of time to ensure excellent coverage. We are confident that over 90% of the transplanted hair will grow and persist for your lifetime.
If your transplant is performed to the high standards of Hair Transplants Melbourne then everybody gets a great result.
