Most Breast Augmentation procedures use an approach incision beneath the breast since this is the simplest and easiest technique for the surgeon. Sometimes it is the only approach offered by the surgeon. If given a choice, many would appreciate an approach incision and consequent scar that is both out of sight and of consistently good quality.
Trans-axillary means through the armpit, the medical term for the armpit being the ‘axilla’
It is generally conceded that technically this approach is the most demanding to master and is a principal reason for it being relatively uncommon.
The approach is through an incision in a natural crease in the armpit and is one of the reasons that the scar is usually imperceptible even when exposed. A second reason is that the skin in this area is quite ‘lax’ so that there is no tension on the healing incision and eventual scar.
This technique is used and the preferred procedure by Dr Fox, the only ‘cutting’ involved is the original incision in the crease. Smooth non-cutting instruments are used for the remainder of the procedure.
Dr Fox has used this technique exclusively for around 25 years.
