5 tips before you make your decision on getting Breast Enlargement (Augmentation)
- Making a decision - the decision for getting breast implants is personal so make sure it is your decision and not that of someone else. Firstly, ask yourself why do you really want or need Breast Augmentation? Size is always an important consideration but a natural appearance is vital. You want to look aesthetically good. The alternative is to have excessively large breasts with a ‘melon’–like shape that makes the augmentation look very obvious and possibly abnormal. Most women want to be admired for their overall appearance and not simply renowned for having large breasts. Once you have made a decision then it would be wise to do some research.
- Do some research - read up on the different types of breast implants and procedures available and most importantly research the experience of the surgeon whom you are considering approaching. Ask him/her questions and read reviews and relevant blogs. It is essential that you understand the procedure and its pros & cons. The safety authorities who examine devices for use in the human population have strict conditions in place before approving them. The organisation in the USA is the FDA (Federal Drug Authority) and in Australia the TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration). Both approve Silicone Gel implants from several companies of high repute. The different makes of implants are comparable.
Without exception, implant manufacturers will guarantee their devices for 10 years, after which they suggest they be replaced. That is not to say that the implants cannot maintain their integrity after this time. It is logical that these companies would state a minimum period of implant integrity. It is a cautious and understandable attitude on their part in order to protect themselves medico-legally.
- Book a consultation - consult with more than one surgeon in order to obtain a broad range of opinion. A consultation should take around an hour so that you can make an informed decision. It should go without saying that the consultation should be with the doctor himself and not with a so-called 'consultant' / 'nurse'.
- What particular technique? - There are different types of breast enhancement procedures. It is important that you know the different options available to you. The position and quality of the scar is important. The simplest approach for the surgeon is through an incision beneath the breast itself, while the least obvious entry point is through a crease in the armpit which is hidden from sight. Even when exposed, it is hard to recognize as anything other than an armpit crease. There is a period of a week after operation when you will be off work in order to make a comfortable recovery. There will be some restriction of particular vigorous activities for about 4 weeks. You will also need to wait 4 weeks before buying a bra of your choice since it takes that time for the swelling (about 5%) to subside.
- The surgeon - make sure the surgeon has experience in performing the procedure that you want and that the operating venue has health authority approval. Make sure you feel comfortable with your decision and confident with the surgeon.
