What is Microdermabrasion?
This much underrated, not invasive procedure was in Vogue in Europe for many years before being introduced to the USA then Australia. We have been performing Microdermabrasion in my rooms for over 10 years now. Depending upon the inherent nature of your skin, and the effects of aging and sunlight deterioration of the quality of your skin occurs.
Microdermabrasion in a non-invasive day procedure that cleans and vacuums the surface of the skin, clearing it of black heads, white heads and minor irregularities. Prominent pores become less visible and the skins surface becomes smoother allowing the easier application of make up. You may see some improvements in fine lines, softness and the skin develops a healthy glow and smoother texture.
Prior to the procedure, an assessment will be made of your skin needs. A freshener treatment and/or subtle changes in the prescriptive skin topicals might be desirable periodically.
There will probably reach a stage where your skin has reached its maximum level of improvement. You then have your micro-peels less often to maintain the improvement you have made and to periodically freshen the appearance of your skin. The optimum time between peels in a series of peels is three to four weeks.
You will notice incremental gains in the overall appearance of your skin with each additional micro-peel as the renewal process receives further stimulation. Discolouration, some dark spots, acne scars and large pores will also improve as the treatments continue.
The final effect is a significant enhancement of the skin texture. Similar to all treatments for environmentally damaged skin, the treatment cannot reverse all the effects of aging and those of years of sun exposure.
Q. How many sessions will I need to have?
A. A single session can be useful to approve the appearance of the facial skin before an important event such as a wedding. However, it has been shown that several treatments (4 - 6) at short intervals of 1-2 weeks actually produce neovasculisation (an increase in the blood supply) of the deep layer of the dermis. In other words it produces a real improvement in skin quality. This can only be maintained by regular follow up treatments at intervals of 4-6 weeks. The application of prescription grade topicals used concurrently will enhance appearances.
Q. How does microdermabrasion works?
A. The most common technique uses a powerful stream of micro-crystals to painlessly clean and vacuum the skin surface. The result is a smooth, fresh appearance. There is also a device that uses a diamond fraise. It is my personal belief that the micro crystals are more effective.
Q. How much is it?
A. Our fee for a single treatment is $130. The cost of each treatment as part of a course is $100. The fee for the course is payable upfront. Depending on the initial condition of the skin a course might be anywhere between 4 and 6 treatments.
Q. What can I expect immediately after treatment?
A. Most clients who undergo treatment will have pinkness lasting between 1-12 hours. Typically, the skin may become punker after several hours but will settle by the foloowing day. For some clients, depending on skin type and/or intensity of treatment, pinkness of the skin may last several days. This can be camouflaged with make-up. However it is important to not wear make-up for the first 24-48 hrs as the skin is still settling and can absorb some of the undesirable contents of makeup.
Also, there can be a superficial flaking or peeling of the skin after microdermabrasion. This is usually not prominent, and is an indication of an expected good result. It will settle after a few days.
