Liposuction or Tummy Tuck - What should I do?
Some people find themselves being advised to have a tummy tuck when all they need is liposuction.
A tummy tuck is a fairly extensive procedure in which the skin and fat of the lower abdomen are excised and discarded and the muscles of the abdominal wall tightened. The down side is it leaves a long scar at the bottom of the abdomen. Also, the umbilicus has to be re-positioned and seldom looks ‘normal’.
People suitable for an abdominoplasty are those who in side perspective have an abdomen that hangs over and below the belt line. These people are usually so distressed by the discomfort and their appearance that the benefits of the operation far exceed any concern they might have for the ‘down side’ features mentioned above. They are usually very satisfied with the results.
People who should never have a tummy tuck are those with anything from a small ‘pot’ to a large abdomen but with no overhang as described above. In this day and age a tummy tuck is an inappropriate treatment for them and liposuction is ideal.
